Starting in 2024, I wanted to make an effort to start listening to full albums more, as opposed to just playlists or shuffled queues. It wasn't until 2025 that I decided to properly keep track these albums, and I did this in the form of a spreadsheet! My spreadsheet seriously encouraged me to explore more music than ever before, and this page acts as a diary of the music journey I went on throughout the year. All of the following are albums I listened to in full for the first time in 2025!
(disclaimer that all of this is for fun, I'm not a pro musician or critic or anything, I'm just a guy who likes listening to music and likes writing down his feelings. If anything sounds interesting, I recommend giving it a listen no matter what I say!)
2025 releases
Most of the music I listen to is from years past, but I do keep up on some new releases!
Order of the albums is from left to right.
LEGION - Creepy Nuts
Genres - Hip-hop, pop
Favourite song - Bling-Bang-Bang-Born
Yes, my favourite song from this album is the one that was trending around the time of it's release... It's really catchy and fun! Creepy Nuts I've liked passively for a while now (because of anime boys, LOL), so I was happy to be able to delve a little bit into their discography with a new release. I preferred songs on this album that were a little more fast and loud, like doppelgänger or Chxxai as opposed to their more pop-sounding music, but overall it was fun to listen to.
Skeletá - Ghost
Genres - Doom metal, hard rock
Favourite song - Lachryma
I got into Ghost just after they released their last album, Impera, so I was really happy to be able to experience the release of a new album! And oh my GOD, from the release of Satanized to the actual album dropping I had all the songs ON LOOP. Lachryma happened to drop just as I was getting over somebody I had cut off, so it hit close to home at the time. Even though I'm no longer feeling that, it's still my favourite... I'm a sucker (pun not intended) for the vampiric allusions, LOL. I do think that as an album, the songs are a little all over the place when played back-to-back-- there's seriously some emotional vibe switches (I'm looking at you, Umbra into Excelsis)-- but the songs on their own are all really good. While I like the introspective lyrics, I just wish there was better cohesion in terms of the order of the songs.
GNX - Kendrick Lamar
Genres - Hip-hop, rap
Favourite song - reincarnated
Kendrick is seriously the modern king of rap for a reason. I can't forgive myself for not being on his music sooner. There's something I love so much about a lot of this album (especially reincarnated) where you can tell he's been to therapy, and that that therapy has encouraged him to express and channel each and every ugly emotion, transmuting it into such power. He works with the featured artists so excellently too, especially SZA (I adored the dreamy feel of luther). Listening to this album fresh out of his Super Bowl performance too was amazing, such incredible talent.
SOFT BALLET
A band I explored the discography of a little bit in the year! I originally found them by chance and thought an album cover of theirs looked cool, and then I promptly found out they have collaborated a lot with my favourite band of all time, BUCK-TICK! Stylistically, the two are kind of similar which I like.
Order of the albums is from left to right.
Genres that SOFT BALLET could class as include industrial, synth-pop and electronic.
愛と平和 (Ai to Heiwa) ("Love and Peace")
1991
Favourite song - EGO DANCE
Beautiful industrial sounds, the vocalist has such a hypnotic voice that layers overtop so well. This album is over an hour long, but captivating at every second.
EARTH BORN
1989
Favourite song - BODY TO BODY
SOFT BALLET's debut album, aaand... if I'm being so honest, I forgot pretty much everything. I'm sure it's great like Ai to Heiwa, I just happened to listen to it during a period where I was listening to a lot of music back-to-back, so it's a blur to me...
MILLION MIRRORS
1992
Favourite song - FRACTAL
I cannot lie about this one either, my memories of listening to it also got lost in the sauce. I remember listening to this specific album because Hisashi Imai, one of BUCK-TICK's guitarists, features on one of the songs, but I think I was so lost in my quest to indulge in every work from BUCK-TICK that I forgot a lot. I vaguely remember this one as being a little darker in sound than Ai to Heiwa and EARTH BORN, but I'll need to re-listen...
My wife...
My girlfriend Eris (whose page you can find here) and I listen to a LOT of music together. Our tastes are generally very similar, but there's just enough deviation that we keep things fun. We've said that 90% of our taste is the same, but then there's that 10% that makes it interesting. These albums here are that 10% in question, ones that were his suggestion for the day.
Order of the albums is from left to right, top to bottom.
Hell Freezes Over - Eagles
1994
Genres - Rock, country rock
Favourite song - Hotel California (live)
A live album I found on CD and gave to Eris because she loves the Eagles, and subsequently got me knowing a lot of their songs. I remember this album being very relaxing to listen to, but the other thing that struck me being that the live version of Hotel California on this album sounding a little... seductive? Sexual? Not that I was mad about that, I just wasn't expecting it out of Hotel California. There are a lot of their greatest songs on this album too, like Take It Easy and Love Will Keep Us Alive
Fetch the Bolt Cutters - Fiona Apple
2020
Genres - Alternative pop
Favourite song - Under The Table
Fiona Apple comes through in her most recent album with her usual experimental sound and introspective lyricism (thank you Eris for getting me onto her music!! You're the reason I'm even able to say all of that). I found out after the fact that this album was created pretty much entirely on GARAGEBAND too?! Anything is possible, really! What I really like about this album is the fact that you can tell Fiona Apple has grown up a lot since her first (and most well-known) albums. She still struggles greatly, she sings of all the ugly feelings she's experienced and the conflicting memories she harbors, but she writes about them in such a way that you can tell she's been through it for many years-- and that she doesn't want to be trapped by them at her age. Songs like the titular Fetch The Bolt Cutters and Under The Table strike me because as much as they come from a place of sorrow, there's indication that that sorrow can have an end, that power lies in one's hands to put an end to it. I also need to mention that I love every bit of percussion in Fiona's songs. There was some seriously groovy stuff on this album.
The Colour And The Shape - Foo Fighters
1997
Genres - Alternative rock, hard rock
Favourite song - Up In Arms
This one we listened to on CD together after finding a copy in his parents' CD collection! I remember doing crafts together to this and quite enjoying it, but I can't say I remember anything specific, unfortunately... Just the energy of listening to his parents' Foo Fighters CD on a March afternoon was very nice, though.
フェスベスト (FES BEST) - GOLDEN BOMBER
2016
Genres - Pop punk, visual kei
Favourite song - ICE BOX
I found out only after the fact that this is a "greatest hits" type album, but I'm not going to complain because Golden Bomber has an incredible selection of songs. They've always stuck out to me among other vkei bands because of the lighthearted and silly nature of their songs. The most popular song of theirs on this album, 女々しくて (memeshikute), never fails to make me want to dance and smile.
SUZUKA - ItimatuSuzuka (or IchimatsuSuzuka)
2022
Genres - Experimental pop
Favourite song - MidNocturne
I'm going to put my girlfriend on blast for a moment and say that he's very into vtubers. This is relevant to the context of this album, because ItimatuSuzuka is one, but not in the conventional [stereotypical] sense of being a streamer or [bad] singer who does a lot of fanservice-y actions towards a parasocial audience behind the guise of a two-dimensional anime boy avatar. Suzuka's online persona is that of a haunted, century-old doll who has come into our modern age to make music and games. Her music is often made for her games, and certain tracks on this album are not exempt from that, but when it's not for a game she makes unconventional pop music with nasally vocals in a similar vein to Sheena Ringo... and I LOVE IT. Eris stumbled upon Suzuka by chance a few years ago, and progressively more and more of her music has appeared in our playlists. I can't say much about lyricism because it's all in Japanese (and with no translation because she's rather niche), but her experimental instrumentals and vocal style are really delightful. If you're into "weird girl" stuff at all, THIS IS WHAT YOU GOTTA LISTEN TO!
BAN The prologue of GUCHAGUCHA Soundtrack - ItimatuSuzuka/IchimatsuSuzuka
2025
Genres - Soundtrack, experimental pop
Favourite song - Monster
The soundtrack to the latest game Suzuka has released. I haven't played the game (yet), so I can't speak on how the music sounds in relation to the game-- we just ended up listening to this because Eris was notified of a new release from Suzuka. While most of it is, in soundtrack fashion, purely instrumental, there are also a few songs with Suzuka singing (Monster is one such song). Parts of it were very bubbly and cheerful, others horrifying, I liked all of it.
In The Wake of Poseidon - King Crimson
1970
Genres - Progressive rock
Favourite song - Peace - A Theme
A lot of people (prog rock fans and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure fans alike, Eris and I happen to be both) know of King Crimson through their most popular album (and song of the same name), In The Court Of The Crimson King, I'd say this album is the sequel to it, stylistically and literally. It's the album that was released after ITCOTCK, and the two are very similar. Eris got me to listen to this album with the perfect atmosphere for it-- while we were going for a walk on a beautiful, sunny spring day. Because this is the album right after ITCOTCK, the style deployed in this album is very similar to the one before it. I believe the same people who created ITCOTCK made this album, before King Crimson went on to change line-ups many times over. Their experimental instrumentals and sound design are fantastic, and polished nicely (which can be seen as a plus or a negative, depending on how much you like the unpolished feel of ITCOTCK) in this album. The fantastical narrative structure in their songs present in their previous album is present in this one too, which I like. I can't emphasize this enough, if you've ever listened to ITCOTCK and liked it, this album is definitely worth a listen too. King Crimson has plenty of 10-minute long rock music with flutes and fantasy to go around.
Little Dark Age - MGMT
2018
Genres - Synth pop
Favourite song - Little Dark Age
Little Dark Age (the song) has trended on TikTok many a time, but the rest of the album that it's from is such a hidden gem! There are some electrifying, almost psychedelic songs with an uplifting sound that hides some more complex lyrics. Besides the titular song, I really liked When You Die and Me and Michael.
Gawk - Vundabar
2015
Genres - Indie rock
Favourite song - Alien Blues
Eris really liked the song Alien Blues from this album. From my understanding, it's Vundabar's most popular song. She suggested we try out the whole album if that song is so good, and... it didn't really strike either of us. So why do I find it noteworthy, and why am I including it in a section dedicated to my girlfriend's taste if the only song that really stuck with her was Alien Blues? Because the memory of listening to it together holds a warm place in my heart still. It was a July night, and we were sat on his bed in ambient lighting. We might have been drawing or doing crafts alongside each other despite the lighting, as is often the case when we listen to these albums together, but I don't quite remember that much. Even though it wasn't our vibe, we listened to the whole album anyways, and there's something about the fact that we will sit together through something that may not be our favourite in the world but still make it meaningful together. It goes to show that I really love all of the time I spend with him, and that's what I feel is noteworthy about this album. Sorry if an indie rock fan is reading this looking for a good review, the most I have to say about the album itself and not my sappy associations is that I think I disliked it because I just don't like men in indie music. I think if there were women in this album I would have more to say.
Random choices...
Just some ones I wasn't sure how to categorize. I guess there's a little bit of hyperpop, a little bit of late 80s-early 90s, a little bit of metal?
Order of the albums is from left to right, top to bottom.
10000 gecs - 100 gecs
2023
Genres - Hyperpop, pop-punk
Favourite song - I Got My Tooth Removed
I listened to this one right after listening to their first album, 1000 gecs. The reason I listened to their first album initially was because the last time I had listened to it was in 2020 or 2021 (a dark time of being an "alt kid" on TikTok, but for the record I was into nightcore years before 100 gecs hit the scene, so it was only natural for me to be drawn to them at the time), so it was somewhere between nostalgia and simply wondering where 100 gecs has gone since. What I noticed is that the sound of this album was a lot less experimental than their first album, leaning a lot more into typical pop influences. I think there's something charming in how odd and chaotic their music is, so for there to be less chaos? I wasn't a very big fan. I Got My Tooth Removed is probably closest to what I liked about their music, which is why it's my favourite track from the album.
BRAT - Charli xcx
2024
Genres - Electro-pop, dance, hyperpop
Favourite song - N/A
I listened to this a whole year after "brat summer" so maybe I have no right to speak when I was late to the party, but I actually didn't like this album! I have a playlist where I've kept track of songs I liked from every album I listened to, but when I went to search for Charli xcx in it there was simply nothing, so I went to go look at the album and... yeah, I can't say I want to call any my favourite. It's not that I don't remember any of them, because between the fact that it was the album of the summer in 2024 and the fact that 365 plays at my retail job every day I very much remember a lot of them. It's just that what struck me the most about the album were lyrics constantly peddling cocaine and not eating as fun, "party girl" things to do. Call me a party pooper but seriously, coke and EDs? When we wanted to bring back Y2K that meant that we were going to leave things that have ruined so many lives behind, right? Obviously I know that most people who were having a "brat summer" weren't going "wow, Charli xcx just told me to do a line, I must right now!" but the fact that such a big artist writes about it as though it's just an average or even fun thing is so disconcerting to me. One could say it's satirizing or critiquing the lives that many party people lead, but it sure doesn't sound like it to me. I really don't care if people like it, the sounds of the album are fun and easy to dance to, I just can't listen without thinking of the ugly and VERY dangerous things that hard drugs and EDs can do to a person.
Violator - Depeche Mode
1990
Genres - Gothic rock, synth-pop, alternative rock
Favourite song - Sweetest Perfection
Okay, I promise not all albums in this category I have something negative to say about. That's because this album is incredible, it has a lot of Depeche Mode's best songs on it. Personal Jesus is a classic and never gets old for me, but I love the solemn and slow feel of songs like Waiting for the Night and Sweetest Perfection. All of this coupled with their gothic electronic sounds and poetic lyrics makes for such a wonderful listen, either in the background while doing something or focusing in on the sounds that surround you. It's like being tucked into an inky-black blanket.
Chocolate Starfish And The Hotdog Flavoured Water - Limp Bizkit
2000
Genres - Nu metal, rap metal
Favourite song - Livin' It Up
There's something about Limp Bizkit's style that is really great. I love their fusion of rap and metal, and how straightforward their lyrics are. I knew some of their most popular songs going into this album, like Rollin' and My Generation, and I came out loving some of their less-but-still-kind-of-popular songs like Livin' It Up and Full Nelson. I think this is an album where a lot of the songs on it are striking in their own right, but in album format it's kind of long and dragged out. A lot of the songs in the first half are more hype, it mellows out a little by the end. Still a fun listen though!
Countdown to Extinction - Megadeth
1992
Genres - Thrash metal, heavy metal
Favourite song - Symphony of Destruction
If I'm being entirely honest, I remember listening to this one because I was in a stint of listening to Symphony of Destruction a lot... and that's all I remember. Not that it was bad, because I also remember thinking I should listen to old thrash metal some more, but unfortunately it simply wasn't one that stuck out to me past that...
Whenever You Need Somebody - Rick Astley
1987
Genres - Pop
Favourite song - It Would Take a Strong Strong Man
Coming out as an unironic Rick Astley fan. I don't give a damn about being Rick-rolled because, quite frankly, why would I be mad about being surprised with a jolly good tune? Outside of Never Gonna Give You Up though (which is the first song on the album, by the way. I wholly wasn't expecting it, and I got Rick-rolled), there are many wonderful, danceable songs on this album. Rick Astley's lyrics are for the YEARNERS! Really! Many of the songs (such as Together Forever and the titular Whenever You Need Somebody) are kind of romantic pop ballads, and I like that, I think they're sweet. There's really not much more rhyme or reason as to why I liked this album, it's just good fun.
RECCS FROM FRIENDS!
These are albums my friends showed or suggested to me! I love getting a sample of my friends' tastes!
Order of the albums is from left to right, top to bottom.
THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND - Bad Omens
2022
Genres - Metalcore, alternative rock
Favourite song - THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND
I don't remember too much from this album unfortunately. My friend recommended the band because they were coming to our area in the year, and so I put this album on while I was working on something. I'm not a big metalcore type of person, I prefer a more classic metal type of sound, but I still enjoyed this album a lot. I think the vocalist has some really nice talent.
Seven and the Ragged Tiger - Duran Duran
1983
Genres - Synth-pop, new wave
Favourite song - The Reflex
Big shoutout to my friend Zag, who told me I would really like this album after I expressed to him how much I loved the style of Duran Duran's other songs, Save A Prayer and The Chauffer. I knew The Reflex going into this album, and it's still my favourite song from it, but I feel like not mentioning the vibey, calm new wave synth in the latter half of the album would be doing it a disservice. Songs like Union of The Snake, Tiger Tiger and The Seventh Stranger are almost hypnotic, and I like that a lot, Duran Duran does it really well.
Holy Cow - Martini Ranch
1988
Genres - New wave, synth-pop
Favourite song - Hot Dog
A hidden new wave gem that a friend recommended to me while I was in a new wave kick. The instrumentals are goofy, bouncy and fun, with some over-the-top lyrics to match. Upon looking into this album, it turns out that there are guest appearances from three members of DEVO and one from the B-52s?! I'm really not sure what the story behind this album is, especially because it doesn't seem the band is very big at all, but it's still a really good listen.
The following three are all from my friend Seth, who is a very cool music guy who works at a radio (at the time of me typing this). I love you Seth, you rock!
PLEASE COME TO ME - Masma Dream World
2025
Genres - Ambient, experimental
Favourite song - O, Dark Mother
To say this one is in the typical range of Seth's taste is misleading. Seth, if you're reading this, I apologize for putting this one first. It came into my life when he sent it to my girlfriend, having found it in his Spotify "discover weekly." To say that this album was a mysterious thing to crop up in his "discover weekly" is an understatement. At a first glance, the album consists almost entirely of ambient sounds, distant chants and cries, and ritualistic drumming. A quick look into the artist reveals though that this is all very intentional, that this is not ambience for ambience's sake but instead an album produced out of a personal, spiritual deep-dive. The echoes and cries are reflective of entering an abyss, the "void state," and facing the vastness of the world head-on. I wouldn't say this is everyone's cup of tea by any means, but as someone who is also deeply spiritual I really liked it, I felt a lot of emotion going through each and every track. Since I first listened to it, I've put this album on before bed or while meditating. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it so much, but the authenticity in its raw energy is something that really struck me.
Teenage Snuff Film - Rowland S. Howard
1999
Genres - Post-punk, blues
Favourite song - Silver Chain (biased pick, I was influenced by Seth)
One that Seth was very into at the time of me listening to it. Excellent, melancholic instrumentals and lyricism! Makes me want to listen to more blues-style music.
Suede (also known as The London Suede) [Self-titled]
1993
Genres - Alternative rock, britpop
Favourite song - Animal Lover
Seth convinced me to listen to this one because apparently this album is known for the androgynous lovers on the cover, who are actually a lesbian couple. I don't remember too much, probably because I'm not the biggest britpop person, but I think a second listen-through and I'd get a lot of enjoyment.
More random choices...
More that I wasn't sure how to categorize. Not a single overlapping genre amongst these artists.
Order of the albums is from left to right, top to bottom.
Good For Your Soul - Oingo Boingo
1983
Genres - New wave, ska
Favourite song - Who Do You Want To Be
I love the theatricality of Oingo Boingo a lot. I love the satire in a lot of their lyrics, especially in songs like Who Do You Want To Be and Nothing Bad Ever Happens. I also liked that a lot of tracks on this album had their usual fun, new wave sound, coupled with elements of horror with songs like Pictures of You and No Spill Blood. It's no wonder Danny Elfman went on to work often with Tim Burton, with his grim sense of humour. The album starts with a bang and just keeps going, and going, and going-- the energy never stops! It wanes a little at point, but doesn't die completely. It crawls back up and keeps on moving! If you're looking for something face-paced and upbeat, this is the album to listen to.
Nothing To Fear - Oingo Boingo
1982
Genres - New wave
Favourite song - Wild Sex (in the Working Class)
This, being Oingo Boingo's second album (Good For Your Soul above this is their third), I think has a more "raw" sound than a lot of their later songs. It doesn't have as many tracks I like as some of their other albums, but I still like a lot of the tracks on this album. It's just one where I like a lot of individual songs from it, as opposed to everything in order-- which is something I find myself liking with some of Boingo's other albums.
SWITCHBLADE - SCHAFT
1994
Genres - Industrial, electronic
Favourite song - Slice
I don't remember a lot of this one... I listened to it because I was trying to look more in-depth into projects the members of my favourite band, BUCK-TICK, were a part of. SCHAFT is one such project, with BUCK-TICK's guitarist Hisashi Imai as one of the members. I thought this album was very long and not super hype... I'm sorry Imai, I promise I love your instrumentals otherwise...
Mastermind - Tardigrade Inferno
2019
Genres - Experimental metal, dark cabaret
Favourite song - Hypnosis
Let it be known that my actual favourite track is their cover of We Are Number One from Lazytown that is at the end of this album. I've looped it an insane amount, too much to not mention this, but it felt like a crime to me to put that as my favourite as opposed to their originals. Tardigrade Inferno is really incredible, making comically villainous songs that blend dark cabaret with metal instrumentals and vocals. Both are genres I adore, and the blend of them together is really like nothing else. The songs are fun, each with a story of their own and sometimes some deeper commentary beneath the surface (such as in Dreadful Song). This "deeper commentary" is few and far between though, most of it is just singing about villainy for villainy's sake. Still very great though!
The Party Album! - Vengaboys
1999
Genres - Eurodance
Favourite song - We Like To Party! (The Vengabus)
Yes... The Vengaboys. God bless the Netherlands for their contributions to music, but I can't pretend that I remember a single song from this besides the two most popular (We Like To Party and Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!). I imagine this is because in whole album format this album is probably best listened to in a club with a drink for every song, and I was listening with my girlfriend in her bedroom. I don't remember how sober I was, because I doubt I was entirely sober, but I digress. Dance parties did ensue, fun was had, and that's all that really matters coming from this album I think.
Herstory in the Making - Young M.A.
2019
Genres - Hip-hop
Favourite song - Bleed
Young M.A. deserves just as much attention as some of her male contemporaries, I'm so serious. Her lyrics, talking a lot about poverty, sexuality, gender and other hardships are very striking. Her style is very down-to-earth and honest, not shying away from any ugly truths. I like the sultry quality of her voice and the sharpness of her beats. There are a lot of songs on the album, unpacking a lot of M.A.'s life's story from the beginning to the end of the album. I'm usually not a fan of albums that are so long, but this one is different, it captivated me through the whole thing and I was always interested in what she had to say next. I'm not very versed in hip-hop, but PettyWap and Bleed are songs I'd consider essentials to my rap/hip-hop playlist.
VISUAL KEI!
I love visual kei! It has been consistently in my life for many years now, but there's always so much more to discover in the genre. There are so many different sub-styles and artists, and lots to explore from artists I already like. This is what I looked into in the year.
Order of the albums is from left to right, top to bottom.
in the direction of sunrise and night light - deadman
2005
Genres - Alternative rock, indie rock
Favourite song - raison d'etre
I'd need to give this one another listen, I forgot a lot about it (probably because the time I listened to it was around the time of me starting a job and preparing for a convention simultaneously)... What I do remember though is that it was very vibey, kind of dreamy as visual kei tends to be, and that it was nice to listen to in the evening.
MARS - Gackt
2000
Genres - Pop rock, alternative rock
Favourite song - Vanilla
Sigh... I listened to this one right before Gackt decided to make a comment about how Japan needs a leader like Trump, and now it's forever soured for me. Gackt is a whole can of worms who has said a lot of questionable things over the years, but that was probably the absolute worst of it. Unfortunately, his music (at least his early music, which this album is a part of... I've heard very mid-rate reviews about everything that follows this album) is really good. The amount I have listened to and busted a move to Vanilla is a travesty, the emotion in U+K is really touching (especially as a MALICE MIZER fan who loves Kami...), and the style of songs like AsrunDream or Illness Illusion is really wonderful. If you want a dream-like album that blends pop and rock with baroque and bossa nova influences, pirate this album, or listen to it re-uploaded by somebody who isn't Gackt on YouTube. I can't wait to have a talk with this man in Hell.
XANADU - JILUKA
2019
Genres - Electric metal, metalcore
Favourite song - Ajna -SgVer- (2019 ver.)
I saw JILUKA live in 2025!!! This was very, very, very exciting, because I'd been following them for 5 years at that point, and seeing how popular they've become and how much they've grown into their style has been such a delight. This album really marks the start of JILUKA as they are now, transitioning from their earlier works into a heavier, more electric style befitting of them. This album has a lot of my favourite songs from them, like Hellraiser, Last Faith and Bloodshot. Lots of headbangers! I only listened to it all the way through though for the first time while on the bus to the concert, and I remember how excited I was thinking about how their songs have been with me for a while... This is a great place to start when getting into JILUKA!
Xtopia - JILUKA
2020
Genres - Electric metal, metalcore
Favourite song - Menace
Also one I listened to on my way to see JILUKA. Not nearly as long as XANADU but still packs a punch! Nothing much else for me to say, really.
Heart - KAMIJO
2014
Genres - Symphonic metal, neoclassical
Favourite song - Moulin Rouge
Kamijo is one of my favourite visual kei artists-- and artists in general-- of all time. His vocals during his solo career, having come from decades of refining, are so powerful and they're accompanied by equally as powerful backing melodies. I am SUCH a sucker for mixing classical with metal, and that's Kamijo's whole thing. There are such romantic songs in here, whole symphonies flouncing Kamijo's royal image. I think he really comes into himself in this album, with tracks like Romantique and Death Parade. There are also some fun twists, like with Moulin Rouge bringing in some showtune influence. Very great for if you want to feel like an evil elegant vampire.
LILLIE CHARLOTTE within Metamorphose - LAREINE
2013
Genres - Baroque pop
Favourite song - Metamorphose
This album showcases some of LAREINE's best, with beautifully adorned songs that bring a light feel to the signature rock notes of visual kei. Kamijo's higher-pitched vocals in this era of his career are very sweet to listen to, and LAREINE's music always seems to transport me into a fancier, more romantic world. The most well-known song from this album is probably their cover of the Rose of Versailles intro, 薔薇は美しく散る (bara wa utshukushiku chiru), which they do do an excellent take of! The rest is also just as magical though, and this album I'd say is a really great place to start if you want a feel for LAREINE-- or even visual kei as a whole (especially if you like bands like MALICE MIZER, Kamijo was inspired by them to form LAREINE!).
GOLDEN SUN AND SILVER MOON - SHAZNA
1998
Genres - Pop rock
Favourite song - Magenta Story
This one is actually an album, unlike the one below this, LOL. It contains some re-recordings of some of their singles, like Melty Love and Sumire September Love, but with some touches that still make them unique in the confines of this album. Parts of this album I found to be a bit slow-going (it's nearly an hour long), but there's still a lot to get out of it and plenty of fun to be had, like much of SHAZNA's discography.
Promise Eve - SHAZNA
1997
Genres - Pop rock
Favourite song - Melty Love
Technically an EP, but I don't really care... it has enough songs to warrant an album entry. Izam's stare on the cover of this album brings you into a series of fun and peppy songs that add a golden glow to whatever you're doing. Melty Love is such a wonderfully joyous song, so is Dizziness. If... with tears in one's eyes is also a song I really enjoy, it has an energy of yearning but it's still just as bright as the rest of SHAZNA's discography. If you want feel-good energy, this is what you should listen to.
AJJ
My girlfriend has let me into her heart by sharing with me one of her favourite artists, AJJ. In 2025, when I made it apparent one of my goals was to explore certain artists' discographies in more depth, she got me to look into AJJ's. I've come to enjoy them a lot, and the more I've listened the more I've thought about how criminally underrated (outside of their most popular songs) they are.
Order of the albums is from left to right.
Genres that AJJ could class as include folk punk and art rock.
Can't Maintain
2009
Favourite song - Self Esteem
This one is AJJ's third album, coming after their most popular album (and one of my favourites) People Who Can Eat People Are The Luckiest People In The World. I think it takes a step away from the more unhinged energy of People Who Can Eat People, but is similar in that it's still rather raw in its instrumentals and lyricism. None of the tracks are very long, so it takes a lot for them to stick out-- like the blunt lyrics of Self Esteem or the kazoo sonata in the middle of the album. I don't think it's bad by any means, everything AJJ makes is really enjoyable, this album just didn't strike me the same way some of their others have.
Disposable Everything
2023
Favourite song - I Wanna Be Your Dog 2
One of my favourite genres of art is "has gone to therapy, learned the skills, but the chronic mental problems don't stop." This, I think, is AJJ's contribution to that genre. I mean, a lot of their work could contribute as such but this one has a kind-of calm energy to some of the songs, it makes me think of the moments where the world just keeps turning no matter how you feel. Songs like Dissonance show a yearning to understand and get a hold of life more. It's not nearly as hard on the punk rock elements as some of their other albums, but it keeps them at its core no matter what.
Only God Can Judge Me And More
2008
Favourite song - Jesus Saves
A compilation of some of AJJ's earlier songs not on their previous albums. I think a lot of the songs on this one are a lot more unfiltered than their other albums, which is saying something because "unfiltered" and "AJJ" tend to go hand in hand. Spoiler, but there's a song on the album that implies the kitten on the cover doesn't end well. Obviously with the title too there's a lot of religious references, typical of AJJ as well but more frequent on this album. I think this album is great if you want a punk album that goes for longer than half an hour.
The Bible 2
2016
Favourite song - Terrifyer
AJJ's lyricism is seriously like nothing else, and this album-- which falls on the later side of their discography-- really proved that to me. They so perfectly balance intensive songs with more mellow ones, each showcasing such an array of emotion. The vulnerability in songs such as the first one, Cody's Theme, or the second-last, Small Red Boy is something that strikes me so much.
On CD!
God bless thrift stores and their CD sections. Seriously, you can find a lot of good if you go searching in them. All of these I got and listened to on CD in 2025.

Drag - k.d. lang
1997
Genres - Pop, blues, country
Favourite song - Don't Smoke In Bed
Album so good I didn't realize it was a cover album until I looked it up later. K.D. Lang's voice is so hypnotic and soothing, it's sultry quality at times is something I'm so weak for. One thing I'm such a sucker for is when an album starts on a strong note, and Don't Smoke In Bed is I think one of the best beginnings to an album of all time. Again, I forgot the songs on this album weren't hers to begin with because she renders them so well. I think it's fun that a lot of the songs she chose too are songs that reference smoking in some way... I thought the album title "Drag" might have been referring to drag the art form, since this is the album that preceded Lang coming out, but I realized it could mean a drag of a cigarette too... maybe that's an intentional double-entendre, I don't know. Regardless, K.D. Lang is amazing to play in the background of what you're doing. This album is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to her, and it's still so incredible.
The Fame - Lady Gaga
2008
Genres - Electropop, dance pop
Favourite song - LoveGame
I don't think there's anything I could say about this album that hasn't been said already. Even going into it, I already knew pretty much all of the songs, I'd just never listened to the album in order. Lady Gaga made her debut with a bang! I guess the one thing I could say is that I'm glad I got this album secondhand and can listen without streaming... I'm cynical when it comes to celebrities, and Gaga is absolutely included in that. Her music and artistry is fun and iconic, but she'll live lavishly for the rest of her life if I don't stream her music or buy directly from her, you know?
Purple Rain - Prince
1984
Genres - Pop, rock, R&B
Favourite song - When Doves Cry
Also an album where there's not much I can say that hasn't been said already. Not a single bad song on this album, seriously. Each one is so engaging in its own unique way, and they all flow together perfectly as well. I felt so blessed finding this CD at the thrift, and extra blessed when my girlfriend and I went to check out when the CD was made and it was made in the year the album came out! SO much good, I don't even know how to put it into words.
